Commemorating a Great Hero: A Visit at Liwasang Rizal, Brgy. Poblacion, Valenzuela City

Rizal Day is held every 30th of December in remembrance of the day when Jose Rizal was executed in Bagumbayan (present day Rizal Park). This vital moment in Philippine history served as a catalyst in our country's fight for independence.
Wreaths lay in front of the Rizal monument
One Valenzuela hopes that Valenzuelanos make it a point to remember and emulate Rizal's good deeds for the country. Kaya kaya, ka-Valenzuelano? (Can you do it, fellow Valenzuelano?)

Yes, One Valenzuela believes you can.

Simbang Gabi at San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, Malinta, Valenzuela City

Simbang gabi (or "night mass") is among those popular traditions practiced by Roman Catholics in the Philippines during the Christmas season. Here are some snapshots of the simbang gabi at San Isidro Labrador Parish, Brgy. Malinta, Valenzuela City. The first mass began at 4 a.m. in the morning.
A few minutes before 4 a.m. Rev. Fr. Bogs Ortega lead the mass.
Christmas tree fixture at the side of the church.
Hot puto bumbong and bibingka await Valenzuelanos outside the church.
Did you complete the series of simbang gabi, Valenzuelanos?
Merry Christmas po from One Valenzuela!

Malabon Pancit Festival at SM Center Valenzuela: Bringing the Festivities to the City

Being a community mall, SM Center Valenzuela comes up with activities which involve the people. Among their programs in line for Valenzuelanos is bringing the festivities from other places to the mall so that Valenzuelanos and other shoppers can have the fiesta experience without going outside the city.

Malabon Pancit Festival in SM Center Valenzuela
Malabon, Valenzuela’s neighbor city, is holding the Luglugan Festival every December 4-8 under the Sanggunian Resolution A64-2004. Highlighted here is the popular Pancit Malabon which has the city’s namesake. In cooperation with AKLAT Foundation, Malabon City LGU, and Valenzuela City LGU, SM Center Valenzuela is bringing the pancit festival to the city! Just this Sunday, December 7, One Valenzuela was glad to be invited to witness the opening of the Malabon Pancit Festival at the Events Center of SM Valenzuela.

Visitors register for the Malabon Pancit Festival.
Emma’s Pancit Malabon, MFlores Pancit Malabon, MilFlores Pitchy-Pitchy, Ellet’s Sweet, and Hazel’s Puto form the group of exhibitors which caters to the hungry Valenzuelano. Here you can sample their pancit, buy jars of garbanzos, nata de coco, and halo-halo mix, or sink your teeth on a puto pao and other native delicacies.

Malabon Councilor Sonia Lim, Malabon Vice Mayor Jeannie Sandoval, Malabon Councilor Nadja Marie Vicencio, SM Center Valenzuela Mall Manager Ms. Jacqueline Tan, Valenzuela Councilor Charee Pineda, and former Malabon Councilor Ian Emmanuel Borja were present at the opening of the Malabon Pancit Festival.
Tanghalang Bagong Sibol of Malabon National High School performed a dance routine in front of the crowd. The group came here with their Associate Director, Mr. Anthony Cruz.

One Valenzuela has been reading good feedback from netizens about Ellet's Sweets.

Hopping from one booth to another, One Valenzuela would say that you should have some pansit from MFlores Pancit Malabon. For only Php75.00, you can already dig in on a plateful of their well known pansit which was highly praised by Tonipet Gaba on his blog, Side B.ph. It was also featured at Unang Hirit and Poptalk (receiving 9 Pop Points!). Their long quekiam tastes good too  and is priced at only Php29.00 a piece. One Valenzuela wants a cup of rice with this. Sarap i-ulam.

MFlores Pancit Malabon and MilFlores Pitchy-Pitchy
This is it, pancit! One Valenzuela is wishing that MFlores Pancit Malabon is just nearby. Make her dream come true by opening a branch in Valenzuela City, please?
Other than the food exhibitors, Tropang Artistiko, a group of photographers, has several works on display.  Rico Mari Photography, Tropang Artistiko member, of Malabon also has a booth here.
Tropang Artistiko members: Derick and Dong. Your names remind One Valenzuela of two local actors.

The event which was supposedly scheduled for three consecutive days since Sunday was rescheduled in preparation to Typhoon Ruby. Discussing the said calamity with Ms. Joanna and Ms. Lorie of SM Center Valenzuela, One Valenzuela learned that the Events Center becomes an evacuation center to Valenzuelanos in situations like this one. “Unahin po natin ang mga tao, ” Ms. Joanna said.
Drop by at the SM Valenzuela Events Center on December 13 and 14 for the continuation of the Malabon Pancit Festival
Missed this event yet still want to have a taste of what Malabon has to offer? The Malabon Pancit Festival exhibitors will be at the SM Valenzuela Events Center again this coming December 13 and 14, Saturday and Sunday, to showcase their products.  That’s a sweet treat, SM Center Valenzuela!

A Night Filled with Coffee, Tea & Symphony at Brgy. Marulas, Valenzuela City

Together with Little Beijing, Coffee, Tea & Symphony was cited by Pepper.ph  as among those few, outstanding places in Valenzuela City that one can dine. Coffee, Tea & Symphony imbibes a modern feel to customers. The fascinating chairs with colorful cloth patterns, tables of various shapes, and wonderful ornaments thoughtfully placed in different locations within the shop give it a unique and endearing atmosphere.
Coffee, Tea & Symphony at night.
One Valenzuela was lucky to have a brief talk with its Valenzuelana owner, Juliet Paderes. Coffee, Tea, & Symphony has already been brewing coffee, shaking milk teas, and blending smoothies for nine months now. She also said that they make use of fine quality ingredients for its products and that they try to simply serve the best to Valenzuelanos and just anyone who enter the shop in search of a good drink, meal, or a light snack.
Hanging bird cages give the white ceiling more character. Ms. Juliet said that several baby showers and parties have been held here.
Just lovely. One Valenzuela thinks this space is perfect for long conversations with good old buddies.
The shop's regular clients come from the nearby schools like Our Lady of Fatima University. They also receive rice meal orders from nearby establishments and residents.
Another space in the shop which is appealing to the eye. Who would have known that the mismatch patterns on the wall would actually work?
What’s in store for customers? Coffee, Tea & Symphony offers hot coffee and tea, healthy smoothies made from fresh fruits, premium and classic milk teas, over iced and ice-blended drinks, with a price range of Php55.00 to Php165.00. Rice meals, sizzling, noodles, platter, pasta, pica-pica, and sandwiches are also available which are priced from Php85.00 to Php360.00.
One of those cool chairs that you may seat on. You will also see the al fresco area of Coffee, Tea & Symphony in this photo.
One Valenzuela, hubby, and Little One Valenzuela ordered drinks and a muffin for dessert to end the day since they were still full. While waiting for the orders to arrive, One Valenzuela was able to update her phone’s system in a matter of minutes. Good connection for a coffee shop! Net savvy individuals will be very pleased to know about this.
Wintermelon Fuji Milk Tea, Yellow Sunset, and Chocolate Cookie by Coffee, Tea,& Symphony
The Wintermelon Fuji Milk Tea (Large, Php115.00) arrived in a mason jar. Interestingly, it is the first time One Valenzuela saw  milk tea served in a glass here in the city (after gulping so much milk tea this summer). The Yellow Sunset is made of banana and strawberry (Medium, Php110.00). The Chocolate Cookie is an ice blend which will make chocoholics very happy (Medium, Php125.00).

There were several pastries on display like their chewy brownies, lava cake, and almond butter loaf. The red velvet muffin (Php85.00) One Valenzuela got is dense and rich.

Red velvet muffin (Php85.00)
Overall, One Valenzuela would say that the drinks are good for their price. She could imagine her coffee lover friends being thrilled of this place! The rice meals and pasta deserve another visit, more likely with her coffee lover friends now in tow.

Love Worth Sharing: a Fellow Valenzuelano’s Advocacy

One Valenzuela recently received an e-mail from a fellow Valenzuelano, Jon Lazaro of Gen. T. De Leon, who is asking for support on his advocacy entitled “Love Worth Sharing”.  After exchanging several e-mails about his advocacy and asking a few more details about him, One Valenzuela would like to share his campaign by posting his replies on the following article.
Love Worth Sharing: Photography with a Purpose

About "Love Worth Sharing"*
The idea behind “Love Worth Sharing” is the question “What kind of relationship does God want for us?” We often said that we should follow our heart, or use our mind but that is being selfish, isn’t it? I have learned through time that in everything we do, we should ask God for what He wants us to do. In relationships for example, we should ask God first if this guy or girl is the one He wants for us.
Source: Jon Lazaro Photography
“Love Worth Sharing” aims to inspire the youth by telling the stories of couples who had wonderful relationships because they sought God first and they waited for God’s perfect timing. I believe that waiting is also trusting. If we trust God, we can wait.

The advocacy is open to all as long as your stories are God centered. Your stories will be evaluated and we will ask you some questions for clarifications. Every month, we will announce one winner. If you join for a certain month but did not make it, we will schedule you for the next month as long as your story is worth sharing.

Source: Jon Lazaro Photography
There is no word count limit in telling your story. It can be in English or Filipino. Your story will be edited on a 3rd person’s view before posting.

The winner of the month will receive a free photo shoot session worth Php5000. We will organize a meeting with the couple to plan their shoot (location, schedule, and concept). Their photos will be posted on my page with their story. The couple may also request to have their copies (soft copy with watermark) for free.

Who is Jon Lazaro?  One Valenzuela asked a few more questions about his inspiration and photography background. Here is his answer:*
I have been exposed to photography since I was a child. As a child, I was raised on a traditional way. Every time we have family gatherings, we always take photographs. I saw the importance of taking pictures and how valuable the camera is.
Meet fellow Valenzuelano, Jon Lazaro.
When I entered college, I became the organization president of iObscura, a photography organization in the University of Santo Tomas. It led and helped me to master my craft as well as my leadership skills. I  met masters of photography and was inspired by them.

After college, my friends and I did some freelance works. We shoot different kinds of events like weddings and corporate events. It lasted for more than a year until we applied for day jobs.

I used to work for a Christian company for a while where I learned how I should use my skills. After resigning, I put up my own business. Jon Lazaro Photography started last September 2014. Its mission is to show love visually through photography. I believe that God is love and I think I can visualize “love” for others to see God.

My office is located at 2451 M. Delos Reyes St. Gen. T. De Leon, Valenzuela city. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am – 7pm. You can contact us at this numbers: (0906)544-5482 and (02) 245-9318.
E-mail me at jonlazarophotography@gmail.com or like Jon Lazaro Photography on Facebook here.

*The paragraphs above came from Mr. Jon Lazaro’s replies to One Valenzuela’s inquiries after receiving the first e-mail. Due to Mr. Lazaro’s schedule, One Valenzuela was not able to meet him personally. Kindly refer to his Facebook page for more details on the said advocacy. Check out the first featured love story in Jon's Tumblr account here.
