Veterinary Clinics and Grooming Centers in Valenzuela City

Best friends come in many forms.
Bantay needs to have his shots? How about some grooming? A bit unwell? The following is a partial list of veterinary clinics in Valenzuela City which was first collated by Mr. Rob Dimailig of ValPack. The main goal of having this post is for Valenzuela City pet owners to have an easy access to information on the location and contact details of the nearest clinics in their area. One Valenzuela called each of the clinics on the list for permission to post and for updates on their services. Some information are also available at TheFilipinoVet.com. She is still waiting (and hoping) for some clinics' approval to be included in the list.

Thank you very much po to ValPack and all the clinics which participated. This will be very beneficial to all our fellow residents, fellow furparents.

One Valenzuela urges everyone to take care of their pets like family. Being responsible pet owners, let us give them the needed vaccinations, regular check-ups (not only when they are very sick), exercise, and proper diet. This will definitely help us keep them healthy and avoid unwanted illnesses.

Updates? Please e-mail onevalenzuelano@gmail.com and the author will be barking glad for your suggestions. This list will be updated from time to time.

Valenzuelanos of the Month: Valenzuela South Alpha Dogs (VSAD)

Just last Sunday morning, One Valenzuela was able to attend Petness First 2016, an activity held by Valenzuela South Alpha Dogs (VSAD) in partnership with Junior Chamber International - Valenzuela and in cooperation with the Valenzuela City Veterinary Office, Philippine Canine Club Inc., and Pet Mania Veterinary Clinic. It is indeed a wonderful experience to be acquainted with Valenzuelano dog owners while learning more about how we can better take care of our canine friends. Let us know more about VSAD, our featured group of Valenzuelanos for the month of January.

1.   How did VSAD begin? Please tell us how the group started and its core values.

Our founding members initially met when we were still part of another dog group. However, we noticed that we were the only ones coming from the District 2 area. Additionally, we also wanted to meet other dog owners in the same district and conduct regular weekly pack walks. Once our core group was formed, we decided to take it to another level by being advocates of responsible pet ownership and supporting the city's anti-rabies ordinance.

VSAD recently spearheaded the Petness First 2016 event at the People's Park where attendees enjoyed a morning of games, raffle, basic pet care / responsible pet ownership seminar, and dog fashion show contest.
2.       Who are the members of VSAD? How does one become a member? What does a member do in the group?

The members of VSAD come from all walks of life. We accept pet owners regardless of the breed of their dogs. We do not charge any membership fee but we require prospective members to join us in our pack walks regularly before we accept them. Our FB page does not have as many members for we prefer members who will remain committed to the group. We all make an effort to wake up every Sunday morning for our weekly pack walks.

3. What are the activities and programs that VSAD has accomplished in the past years? Any highlights? Future events?

In support of the city's anti-rabies ordinance, we distribute flyers to residents during our pack walks to heighten awareness. We coordinate with the City Veterinarian's Office and work with them during their Anti-Rabies Vaccination activity. We also join other pet events such as the PetaPalooza of De La Salle-Araneta University (DLSAU) and LuvUPet Grand Eyeball wherein VSAD won many awards as a group. For our anniversary, we conducted a feeding program at the city pound and has recently worked with Junior Chamber International - Valenzuela for Petness First 2016. We will be featured in the AgriClub segment of the TV show AgriTV sometime in February. As the summer season arrives, we hope to work with the Valenzuela City Vet as the drive for anti-rabies awareness intensifies during that time.

VSAD will be featured in the AgriClub segment of AgriTV. Being featured in this show will help VSAD in driving across their advocacy for responsible pet ownership and championing animal welfare.
4.   What are the advises that your group can give on responsible dog ownership?

Having a pet is a lifetime commitment. If you can't handle the costs and emotional investments involved, please think twice before getting a pet. Also to reiterate the motto of the anti-rabies ordinance: "Walang asong gala sa taong hindi pabaya."

5.  Dogs for your group... are not for decoration. Like any family member, they have basic needs such as food, shelter, and medicine.
In honor of their first anniversary, VSAD gave back by conducting a feeding program for the dogs sheltered in the Valenzuela City Pound.
6. How can they reach the group and know more about VSAD?

They can always visit our Facebook page: Valenzuela South Alpha Dogs and we will message them to let them know of our walk schedules so they can meet and join us.

Visit VSAD's Facebook page here and send them a message to learn more about the group.

Something for your Canine Babies: Sawdust for Dogs

One Valenzuela feeds her furkids sawdust. Yeah, you heard it right. If you are new to the woof woof world, you might probably associate it with powdery particles of wood. But then there is that sawdust which is made of scraps of raw meat sold in meat shops. Some feed this to their dogs raw but some, like One Valenzuela, would boil and repack it for easier storage in the refrigerator.

She is not a guru on pet wellness but time and again, One Valenzuela would go to veterinary doctors and they would recommend rotating dog food brands and boiled meat. The friendly veterinarians will also remind furparents to remove the salty and toxic products (i.e. chocolate, onion, grapes/raisins, etc.) off your dog's food checklist.
Fresh sawdust from South Supermarket Valenzuela costs 49.95 per kilo.
Gladly, South Supermarket Valenzuela has sawdust and some other dog food alternatives like Superbite (made of chicken; around Php65.00). Dog food kibble choices are limited to a few brands like Pedigree and Alpo though. She believes that the nearest pet place for a bit more kibble variety, vitamins, and other doggie stuff would be Pet Discount situated along MacArthur Highway at Malabon.

Valenzuelanos, have you tried feeding your dogs sawdust? Or any good alternatives other than the usual dogfood?

June and July have been particularly busy months for One Valenzuela! Whew! Will discuss about this soon.

Dexter visits De La Salle Araneta Veterinary Teaching Hospital

Everything went fine last weekend. Come Monday morning, Little One Valenzuela alarmed One Valenzuela about Dexter's condition. "He has a swollen face, Ma!" Upon further inspection, One Valenzuela noticed that there was a small mass just below his mandibles. Hay, great news to start the week!

Quickly searching the internet, One Valenzuela has narrowed it down to a few possibilities: (1) he might have been bitten by an insect (Mmm, maybe a cockroach? This mini pinscher loooves to surprise his furparents with "cute presents"); or (2) a tooth abscess.

One Valenzuela really wanted to bring Dexter Boy to U.P. Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Quezon City since Bell had wonderful results after her bout with ehrlichiosis. She had more time on hand then since it was summer. Now, One Valenzuela could barely relax even in the evening! So many things to do, so little time. Ugh.

Dexter Boy
Good thing, she was always in search of nearby veterinary clinics and hospitals. Well, the list she made came very handy this time around. She chose to bring this poor furkid to the De La Salle Araneta Veterinary Teaching Hospital located at Victoneta Avenue, Malabon in the afternoon.
It says here that the Veterinary Hospital was completed in 2011.
Up we go
After noting this furkid's general condition, appetite, and weight, they were ushered to one of the rooms. Dexter's body was checked and the resident veterinarian, Dr. Ortiz, noticed the now soft skin which seemed to dangle at Dexter's neck. The inflammation has somewhat subsided. Thus, he told One Valenzuela to observe Dexter in the next three days. He also prescribed prednisone for Dexter's condition. (Note: One Valenzuela recommends pet owners to seek the advise of the veterinarian on what medicine should be administered to your pet.)

The cat and dog are looking at the...
...door of the hospital!
Vision and mission of the veterinary hospital
One Valenzuela and Dexter met this cute puppy. Hello!
How much did the check up cost? One Valenzuela shelled out Php250.00 plus Php15.00 for the tablets. They will have to go back to the hospital if Dexter's condition worsens.

Still macho with the pink collar. Thanks, Bell!
Praying for the better.

Update: Dexter is back in his old healthy self. Alive, jumping, and licking!

How to reach the De La Salle Araneta Veterinary Teaching Hospital:
From Malinta, ride any jeepney going to Monumento, Caloocan City (signages: Monumento Circle, Recto, Pier, Divisoria,etc.). Go down at Victoneta Avenue (It is the next street after Pet Discount. You will see a store which sells dog food and chicken feeds at its corner.)

Walk a bit more along Victoneta Avenue and you will see a jeepney terminal which will take you to De La Salle Araneta University. Tell Manong to drop you at the "De La Salle Veterinary".
A short ride along Victoneta Avenue to see the vet. It costs Php8.00 as of this writing.

Valenzuela People's Park: Soon, Ka-Valenzuelanos!

One Valenzuela has been receiving several queries on where to jog and exercise. Well, this is it! We'll just have to wait a little more, Valenzuelanos.

This is going to be exciting. \m/

See this tarpaulin along McArthur Highway? Even Mr. Pug in the photo will be very happy about this.

Thank you, U.P. Veterinary Teaching Hospital!

In the middle of February, One Valenzuela noticed that their furball, Bell, has cloudy eyes. This was quite unusual and so she googled for some information regarding the said condition. The internet did gave answers, a looot of answers, which definitely made her a bit uneasy and worried about their canine bunso.

Notice those cloudy eyes? Bell was still as active as ever but then her "cataract like" eye condition is troubling. A week before this happened, One Valenzuela observed Bell having an increased amount of muta (eye secretions).
With no further delay, off they went to the University of the Philippines Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They travelled via public transportation. Good thing, Bell is used to travelling and meeting other people.
Getting nearer U.P. Vet.
Front of U.P. Veterinary Teaching Hospital

We had a long night hunting for food. Don't disturb us. :)
Cases are handled by veterinary students under the supervision of a veterinarian. Can I insert "awesome" somewhere in the middle and in the end of the first sentence?
After checking on Bell's body and a complete blood count (CBC) test (consultation fee is Php150.00; CBC test is at Php300.00-got the results in less than two hours), the veterinarian explained that One Valenzuela's furkid has a low platelet count which is caused by tick bite/s (garapata in Filipino). It is called ehrlichiosis, a dengue like disease among dogs. An article from the Makati Dog and Cat Hospital site discusses more about the symptoms: "the most common signs that owners observe are weakness, loss of appetite (even with their favorite meal!). There are a number of dogs with a lot of eye secretion aka ‘muta’. If you check their gums and the inside of their ears, you could see that it’s relatively pale from the original pinkish color. All these signs are brought about by low red blood cell count and its components, low platelet and most of the time high white blood cell count."

"Bestfriends", monument in fiberglass, by Glenn A. Cagandahan. It depicts a man sitting on his knee while caressing a dog. The design conveys that man and animal are created equal. This connotes that while animal provides unconditional love and companionship, owning them means taking on the responsibility to care for them throughout their lives.
Bell was given medications which she took for 14 days. On their second check up, her blood test has improved yet she has to continue her antibiotic together with a supplement. On their third visit this March, Bell is given a clean bill of health. Hooray!

"O, graduate ka na!" the vet said. See how happy Bell is after her third visit.
One Valenzuela would like to thank the soon-to-be veterinarians of U.P. Veterinary Teaching Hospital who handled Bell's case. She also want to extend her special appreciation  to Dr. Rouchelle, a super friendly and zealous veterinarian whom Bell definitely got cozy with. Salamat po ng marami!

Getting there:
From Brgy. Malinta, ride an EDSA bound bus (Php23.00). Go down SM North EDSA and find the jeepney terminal. Hop on a jeepney going to U.P. Diliman (Php11.00). Ask the driver to drop you at Checkpoint. Turn right at Emilio Jacinto Street. U.P. Veterinary Teaching Hospital can be found a few meters near the College of Fine Arts.

A Good Way to Start 2014: Jogging at Puregold Valenzuela

Happy new year, Valenzuelanos!

2013 has been an awesome year. As with most Filipinos, One Valenzuela ended it with an abundance of happiness and food from the holiday season. Going back to the usual work routine this January is quite difficult since you can still feel the cold breeze in the morning. Who wouldn’t want to curl up in bed until the sun rises past 6 a.m.? Oh, bed weather!

Yet, since getting fitter and healthier is among One Valenzuela’s goals this year, she is now trying to wake up early every weekend to walk and run. She has been busy at work recently that she is putting off exercise at the very far end of her to-do list. Gee, what a lame excuse! Tsk, tsk. Inspired with a handy-dandy book written by Rachel Newcombe entitled “Running”, she hopes to (and will) get back into shape. Newcombe aptly begins with the following lines:

“Of all sports and forms of exercise, running is one of the easiest and most accessible. It doesn’t involve a wide array of expensive equipment, you don’t need to spend excessive amounts of time or money learning from how to do it, and you don’t need to travel to a specially designed location. Anyone, anywhere, who is willing to have a go, can try running.”

Puregold Valenzuela parking lot. The "best" shots that One Valenzuela's camera phone can do at 5 a.m. Apologies.
Together with the very enthusiastic furball of energy, Bell, One Valenzuela went to Puregold Valenzuela at Brgy. Dalandanan along McArthur Highway. They brought along a bottle of water, a small towel, and a plastic bag (just in case Bell gets into an “emergency”). As early as 5 a.m. in the morning, there were already a lot of people at Puregold’s parking lot though it was still dark. Most came in groups and a few went solo. Some rode their bikes. Some played badminton. Most of them went around in circles to jog and walk.
Shadow play with the furball
Bell saw puppies brought along by their owners.

At last, the sun is up! Other than biking around, a few kids are also playing ball.
By 7 a.m., many are already done with their exercise routine.
Sugar rush! You can also have a cup of taho here.
After ten rounds of mixed walk and run at the parking lot, One Valenzuela was very happy that she was able to stretch out her lazy muscles . As she started her way back home, she felt the cold breeze on her cheeks. Bell looked at One Valenzuela right after. Yeah, 2014 is going to be a great year. Definitely.

Thank you, Puregold, for accommodating Valenzuelanos who want to exercise in the morning. Clap, Clap!

Doggy Day to the Vet: Animal Shop Veterinary Clinic, Pet Shop & Kennel Supply at Paso de Blas, Valenzuela City

Ooooops! Almost forgot about Bell's yearly 5 in 1 vaccination. We went to the Animal Shop Veterinary Clinic at Brgy. Paso de Blas. Dr. Esteban was also the veterinarian of my old pal aspin, Kulit.

Bell is being extra friendly to manong jeepney driver
Dr. Isagani S. Esteban giving Bell her vaccine.
Animal Shop can be easily seen near Malinta Exit/ Tollgate with this big signage.
It is open daily from 9a.m. to 7p.m.
A treat after the vet visit. Good girl!
Her two cents: One Valenzuela has observed that a few would just acquire a pet and show them off to people. Once their pet gets sick, they would suddenly scrimp on giving them proper medication.  She believes that every pet animal must be given ample care and love.

Who is your vet?
One Valenzuela is planning to make a mini-directory of pet clinics in our city on a separate post. Can you help out?
Details such as the (1) name of the clinic, (2) veterinarian, (3) clinic hours, (4) exact location, (5) contact numbers, (6) specialization (opt.) are needed. She will be calling the clinics too to ask for permission to post. Kindly drop a message at the Comments Section.

These details shall be very helpful to our fellow Valenzuelanos, especially to those who are new to taking care of animal friends.

One Valenzuela hopes that you will support the said cause. :)

Salamat, Bahay ni Bantay!

Bahay ni Bantay, a cageless boarding home in Makati, recently opened a new whelping room. And as a fun way of showing it to furkid lovers out there, Bahay ni Bantay posted a photo of the room on their Facebook page and asked its followers to guess how many dogs are in the room.

One Valenzuela guessed the right number. Her furball Bell! got  a new leash and collar. What a prize!

Xend it all the way to Valenzuela. Uber thanks, Bahay ni Bantay!

Gotta Walk the Dog: One Valenzuela and Bell! at the Valenzuela City Hall Complex

One Valenzuela's love for animals can be traced back to her childhood days. A run down on the various pets she had before will include dogs, a barangay of cats, fishes, chicks and ducks from palabunutan, spiders, a pair of turtles, pigeons, and lots of dagang costa.

Many years later, One Valenzuela is now blessed with two furkids. It is a sunny weekend and Bell!, One Valenzuela's ball of energy, enjoyed some doggie running and walking at the Valenzuela City Hall grounds.

One happy Valenzuelana furball
What's that? It's a leaf, Bell!.
Enough of the coffee drinking, come on!
This is the result after the 30 minute walk.
Can we do it again next time? Yes, Bell!
One Valenzuela has been seeing quite a handful of Valenzuelanos walking, playing badminton, and exercising at the City Hall Grounds. She has also seen some cute chihuahuas running with their owner.

Thank God for this pretty neat haven.
