A visit at Aling Nene's Pond in Barangay Coloong, Valenzuela City at the end of the year was the sign that, yes, 2017 for One Valenzuela is almost over. Cheers to a new start! |
So what does the word 'resolution' mean? Looking up for the definition on the Internet, the term refers to 'a firm decision to do or not to do something'. It's a well-used word whenever a new year comes around but it somewhat slips into the individual's unconscious within the following months because of the many things that go on in life (Read on Rappler: Here, you will learn that only 6% of those Filipinos who made New Year's resolutions for 2017 completed "All or Almost All" of the things in their lists).
Just like the Filipinos surveyed by the Social Weather Station, One Valenzuela also creates a list of things which she would dearly call "The Extra Challenge List" because life is already challenging and making a list of things which need more effort to fulfill is definitely not easy.
Learning from experience, this to-do list should be (1) just a few manageable number of things (less is more; for example 5 is better than 10) and (2) that there should be several strategies which will help you remember (i.e. Put the list in a visible area in your room or workplace; Mobile phone reminder; Friends are sometimes one of the best reminders! Bawal ang porkkk.) and complete the plan (i.e. Want to eat more greens? Always make sure to have at least 1 green leafy vegetable on your grocery list). You should also (3) be aware of the different hurdles that you might probably face as you try to fulfill your goals and how to overcome them. Make sure that (4) your goal is measurable as well. Lastly, (5) celebrate when you reach your goal. It doesn't have to be grand. It can be as simple as giving yourself an extra hour of sleep on a lazy Sunday or treating yourself to a cone of ice cream while strolling in the People's Park.
One Valenzuela has 5 on her list and she is sharing with you one of them with more detail (because the post will be pretty long if she mentions all!):

Be a healthier version of herself.
Goal to Reach: Appropriate Body Mass Index
The Why: She also has this one on her 2017 list and has completed her goal of losing a certain number of kilos off (Resolution was to go below 80; just 79.9. After a year, she went from 87 kilos to 67.5). She celebrated this big personal success by joining the Color Run!
Possible Difficulties: So much tempting food everywhere! One Valenzuela blogs about food. Foodie beshies love to eat! Food comforts the soul when one has to burn the midnight oil (a.k.a. magpupuyat para sa mga deadlines ng mga papers na pagkahaba-habaaaaa)
Glitter Run at the SM Mall of Asia grounds became the highlight of One Valenzuela's fitness goals. It was a fun experience! |
Some Strategies to Take:
- Food: Continue with her morning oats breakfast. Always choose food which has less oil. Tea over 3-in-1 coffee. Prepare your own baon. Eat on time. If there's a craving, eat in moderation.
- Exercise: Continue running 4x a week. Add one lap more. Hit the gym at least 1x a week. Celebrate reached goal with a fun run! Or a much-deserved pair of running shoes? Yiz, your shoes are already worn out!(Ipon mode on.)
- Keeping tab: Continue monitoring weight every morning.
One Valenzuela's other four resolutions are about having more quality time with the family (like giving one tight hug a day!), start saving up for that much-needed DSLR camera for better blog posts (and stop being a very dear parasite to your friends! Labyuuu!), upgrading and rebranding your work (infusing technology, working on that cafe concept, setting up an archives, and moooore fun in the Children's Literature class!), and learning a new skill that is baking (Hello to that Tough Mama Oven which is the product of her years in service!)! So much exclamation points for 2018!!!
New Year's resolutions are hard to fulfill but are not impossible. One Valenzuela hopes to complete these for 2018. Ikaw? What's on your Extra Challenge List?
Happy new year, Valenzuelanos!
